Degree Programme Engineering economics formerly FOOD-Processing
Background
In 2010 discussions began on developing a degree programme geared towards the needs of the food industry. Since Lübeck has an excellent University of Applied Sciences, the obvious choice was to propose a project for the creation of an accredited degree in this field.
Following initial training and continued professional development in-house, foodRegio therefore embarked on an academic degree programme as the third step in the education cycle. Such a system of integrated development programmes, adapted to the special needs of the industry, is “best practice” in the truest sense and demonstrates how effective and beneficial an active network can be.
From Idea to Project
Many discussions, workshops and meetings were then held to identify the needs of the companies and define the formal structures and procedures.

From Project to a Permanent Programme
The project, which included the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences, foodRegio and a number of foodRegio companies, resulted in the creation of a course of studies in Engineering economics leading to a B. Eng. degree. The programme began in the winter semester of 2011.
Depending on how certified training in a recognised occupation is, combined with previous educational qualifications, there are three different ways to qualify for entry into the degree programme and complete it:
- Cooperative education (university study combined with on-the-job training, 4.5 years)
- Immediate entry (degree can be obtained in 3.5 years)
- Alternative approach: If the student already has a vocational certificate, he or she can qualify by first attending a vocational school or a vocational school at the upper secondary level for two years.
